This morning, readers of The Miami Herald awoke to learn what any guy with an internet connection has known for years: sometimes people make porno movies in semi-public spots in South Florida. Though, this specific porn was shot on Monument Island near the Flagler Memorial, which was recently restored with $1 million in taxpayer money. While Herald scribe David Smiley is able to muck up some refrained outrage, the overall response he gets is "yeah, whatever, just don't film your porn near a memorial next time." Will officials ever crack down on the city's internet porn industry or is it something we'd all just rather not talk about? Does anyone really care? Frankly, we don't.
It's no secret that Miami is a hotbed for internet porn companies, and that sometimes that shooting spills over to semi-public areas. BangBus.com practically pioneered the industry of cheaply shot internet porn and featured, well, banging taking plus in the back of a big van while it cruised through Miami streets.
Today, companies like Bang Bros, Nerd Pass, and Reality Kings shoot most of their films in Miami. At question in today's Herald story is a scene entitled "Island Adventure" filmed for CaptainStabbin.com, a site that specializes in the peculiar nice of anal sex filmed on boats and is owned by Reality Kings. In the film the filmmakers dock their boat on Memorial Island, an unoccupied island which features a memorial to Henry Flagler. A red-headed model does some anal sexin' with a male model while another blonde woman occasionally lends a helping hand. Several other episodes on CaptainStabbin.com appear to be filmed off the waters of South Florida, but few actually take place on islands.
According to the Herald, few of these porn shoots obtain the proper permits, but Graham Winick, Miami Beach's film and event production manager, appears to be aware of the issue and doesn't seem too worried.
Reality Kings' lawyer says that his company tries to follow the laws, and that public nudity laws only apply if someone is there to actually see the nudity. That wasn't the case for "Island Adventures," he claims.
The porn websites often shoot establishing shots out in public, and occasionally a bit of nudity occurs. Sites like SeeMeInPublic.com, owned by Nerd Pass, and the gay website OutInPublic.com do, however, feature sex in public locales. Hell, OutInPublic.com has fucking on South Beach roof tops, constructions sites, and places that look like public parks.
We find it hard to believe that no one in city or county government isn't aware of the issue, considering these are all hugely popular websites. And we find it hard to believe that some of this filming isn't breaking some law. We just wonder if some ink in the Herald is going to spur them to crack down.
